Exercising without the cost of gym membership

For many of us the idea of paying out £40+ per month for gym membership just isn’t an option. However, this doesn’t mean that you can’t get fit, do group exercise or even use a personal trainer. Here are a few points to consider when looking at your options outside of the tie of an gym membership.


1. Local Classes 

Many of the main gyms offer branded classes such as Les Mills - Body Balance and Body Combat etc... Whilst these classes are good, they are not unique and there are many similar classes run by fitness professionals in the community. Community classes tend to be fairly inexpensive and are a great way to meet new people. Check out local websites and you will be amazed how many classes take place every day close to home.


2. Fantastic and Free

I’m a huge fan of free exercise! There are so many green spaces in the UK, both in urban and rural areas. Head to a local park and put together a simple circuit program. Find a bank and do some uphill sprints; a bench lends itself to tricep dips and press ups, try doing a plank with your hands on a swing (the instability of the swing will help to target your core muscles!), pull ups on the monkey bars, a step for step ups or just using the open space to do squat jumps, walking lunges or jump jacks! Keep an open mind and it is amazing the workout you can achieve. 


3. Boot Camps

Early morning and evening boot camps are springing up everywhere. Some are run by military fitness professionals, others by Personal Trainers. One thing you can guarantee is a fantastic and varied workout. Often run as 3 sessions per week for a fee, the classes are great value and working out outside can be so much more rewarding than running on a treadmill looking at a wall.


4. Personal Trainers

Over the past 10 years the market has been flooded with Personal Trainers who are all now battling to win clients. Hourly rates have dropped and many are offering incentives. Shop around, find a friend to train with and benefit from the knowledge and expertise of a Personal Trainer once a week for far less than you would be paying for gym membership.


5. Budget Gyms

Becoming more popular are low cost gyms, some requiring no membership fee, just payment as you visit. These gyms tends to have basic equipment and can be quite small but if you know what you are doing with the equipment and want to work out on the treadmill / upright bike or rowing machine they can be a good option and most have a fairly well equipped weights area. Classes within these gyms tend to be extra and also many offer Personal Training services. 

There are plenty of options, have a look at your local area and get started today – the cost of gym membership is no longer a valid excuse!
